The Interactive Virtual Incident Simulator (IVIS) is a new fire training simulation tool developed by Little Arms Studios to provide an affordable and portable simulation that uses realistic fire behavior and physics to more efficiently train incident command, communication, and best practices.

IVIS works as a supplement for incident command training by combining multiple tools that many firehouses already have at their disposal. During the simulation, the person going through incident command training uses the same tools they would command during a real life fire scenario in order to more seamlessly transition from training to real life use. IVIS acts as a safe and easily repeatable training ground to nail down best practices related to incident command.

How it works

Participants log on to the program from any device with internet access. The Battalion Chief or Simulation Controller selects units and the type of incident for the scenario. Units/Participants will be dispatched to incident. Participants will need to mark ‘enroute’ and utilize the street map to plan route of travel and water supply. As units arrive on scene the screen will change to the view of the structure. The participant’s screen view will be from the first person perspective. The participant will be able to use the keyboard controls to move around the structure both inside and out. The use of toolbar in conjunction with the keyboard controls will facilitate operational tasks including the use of forcible entry tools, hose lines, ladders and Thermal Imaging Cameras. The program will automatically react to the actions of all participants simultaneously with real time changes in fire conditions on the interior and exterior of the structure. Fire ground communication, command, and coordination will be accomplished using the Fairfax County radio system

The core of IVIS is its realistic fire behavior. Developed to replicate the actions a real fire would take within the scenarios including: where the fire originates, the materials involved in the fire, and the impacts of venting windows and doors.

Developing the simulator

We are currently in the early stages of our first alpha build and making rapid progress towards a full build with optional scenarios including 3-story single family home, townhome, split-level home, and garden apartment complex

In partnership with the Fairfax County Fire Department, we are creating a command training simulator. The Interactive Virtual Incident Simulator is a web-based program that provides emergency responders with a training platform that emphasizes the mission critical components of Command, Control, Communication and Coordination. I.V.I.S. provides responders with a real time virtual incident scene complete with real time user interactive capabilities. The program can be utilized as a single or multi-participant training platform with web based networking using cloud technology. The interactive component of the program takes emergency response incident simulation to the next level by creating a ’cause and effect’ training environment. Strategies and tactics implemented by the participant cause either a positive or negative impact to incident scene operations as well as the other participants engaged in the scenario

The Fairfax County Fire Department has been extremely accommodating with any and all of our needs. From seminars to ride-alongs we’ve gained a wealth of knowledge about fire behavior, safety, and response. We started the project with a tour of the academy and some demonstrations of their training capabilities at the facility. We received an up-close experience with their propane fueled simulator.

We then had the opportunity to spectate a real house burn. Some kind home owners donated the house that they planned on demolishing to the Fairfax County Fire Department for extremely valuable training. They set fires in the basement, first floor, and attic, let them build, and studied how the fire grew, spread, and how the smoke reacted to changes in the environment and ventilation (opening doors, closing doors, and breaking windows)

Accurate Flight Physics

Zephyr is modeled after real world flight physics. Each drone flies differently depending on motor type, weight, and many other factors. This variety and uncertainty is also reflected in Zephyr’s simulations. After flying with Zephyr, you can feel confident transitioning to flying real drones.


Classroom Management System

With an easy-to-use Classroom Management System, Zephyr offers instructors the opportunity to view students’ progress with comprehensive reports that show if learning objectives were met.


Multiple Controller Support

Zephyr supports standard game pad controllers as well as popular drone controllers, making the transition from simulator to real life seamless.


Simulated Drone Failure

What happens when one of your motors fails or a propeller is destroyed? Zephyr allows operators to experience these potentially dangerous situations in a safe environment, where they can practice how to recover from potential malfunctions and land safely.

As FAA laws and regulations are created and updated, Zephyr will stay current and notify users of these changes.
